Luke Walsh Bio

Luke Walsh graduated from Indiana University in 2000 and then began teaching 8th grade mathematics at a small rural school near Taylorsville, North Carolina. After five years in the public education system, he took a break to hike the Appalachian Trail. In 2007, Luke earned a masters in mathematics from Appalachian State University, and since then he has been a full-time mathematics instructor at Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC). Recently, Luke has implemented a program called, “Got S.O.M.E.?: Seeds of Math Enrichment”, where members from the surrounding communities give lectures on mathematical topics like personal finance, election theory, and meteorology. He also exposes CVCC students to S.O.M.E. through Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, as a way to further promote and advertise mathematics. Finally, Luke enjoys keeping current with the latest technologies, especially those related to math education, loves spending time outdoors, and stays busy with his two children, a two year old and a six year old.
